Course 16

Course 16: Olivier Latry: Louis Vierne/Maurice Duruflé

Louis Vierne and Maurice Duruflé are very connected as composers, organists and improvisers; yet their compositions are not often covered in one course. Olivier Latry will demonstrate that this is unjustified. As the permanent player of the famous Cavaillé-Coll organ in Notre-Dame in Paris, this star organist is one of Louis Vierne's successors. Like no other, he has immersed himself in the sound world of the blind Vierne and his favorite student Maurice Duruflé.
After his appointment as organist of Notre-Dame – Olivier Latry was only 23 years old! – from 1995 he was organ teacher at the Paris Conservatory, where he became a trainer of a large number of French organists. As a concert organist and improviser he performs all over the world. As one of the most important French organists of his generation, Latry sees himself as an ambassador of French organ music of the past four centuries. He made several CDs and recorded, among other things, the complete organ works of Duruflé and Messiaen.
