Course 11

Course 11: Leo van Doeselaar: J.S. Bach

How do you play Bach? Every organist has his own ideas about this. The Haarlem Summer Academy does not represent a specific 'Haarlem' performance practice, but rather invites very diverse teachers to share their view of this greatest organ composer of all time with the students. Just like Foccroulle and Zerer Leo van Doeselaar is known for his idiosyncratic approach, where his years of experience as an organist and continuo player at the Dutch Bach Society and therefore his extensive knowledge of playing all kinds of baroque instruments are of great value.
In addition to being an organist, Leo van Doeselaar is also a pianist and fortepianist. He has a flourishing international concert practice, including as a duo player with pianist Wyneke Jordans. Many CDs are in his name. Until 2022 he was organ teacher at the University of the Arts in Berlin, titular organist of the Pieterskerk in Leiden and, still, organist of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. In 2007 he received the Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Prize for his significance for organ culture.
